Mysterious Chachapoyas
(4 days / 3 nights)

Day 1: Chachapoyas
Upon arrival in Chachapoyas, transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: Quiocta Cavern and Karajia Sarcophagus
At 08:00 hrs we depart towards Cruzpata.  From there we hike for 30 minutes to visit the anthropomorphic sarcophagus of Karajia, located on inaccessible cliffs, where the mummified bodies of the most important rulers of the Chachapoyas culture were placed. After the guided tour, we go to the town of Lamud for lunch. In the afternoon, guided visit to Quiocta Cavern, where we can observe thousands of stalactites and stalagmites.  Return to Chachapoyas at 18:30 hrs approx.

Day 3: Kuelap Fortress
We depart towards Kuelap early in the morning, visiting the picturesque Andean villages on the route. After approx. 3 hours, we arrive at the fortress’ parking lot and we walk 15 minutes to the entrance, for the guided visit. At 14:30 we lunch in the town of Maria (or lunch box), and by the end of the day we return to the hotel, after passing through Chachapoyas.

Fantastic Chiclayo
(3 days / 2 nights)

Day 1: Chiclayo – Tucume – Royal Tombs Museum of Sipan

Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel. We depart to visit the archaeological complex of Tucume, famous for its pyramids and terraces surrounding the mountains in a radial shape, and traditionally known as Purgatory or the Raya. We can watch 24 to 26 Pyramids. Then we go to Lambayeque, to visit the Royal Tombs Museum of Sipan (*), with 10 exhibit rooms, where we will see the treasures of the Lord of Sipan and a large collection of gold, silver and copper objects. We will pass by the Church of St. Peter, the longest balcony of Peru (La Casa de La Logia), the Main Square.

(*) The Royal Tombs Museum of Sipan is closed on Mondays.

Day 2: Chiclayo – Sipan (Huaca Rajada)

In the afternoon, we leave towards Huaca Rajada (*) 33kms Southeast of Chiclayo and 2kms from Sipan; the site where the intact tomb of an elite figure was found (Moche 200 to 700 DC) called the Lord of Sipan. The sumptuousness of their ornaments and the high degree of its cultural technological development is considered the most important archaeological discovery of the century. We visit the site Museum.

(*) Huaca Rajada is closed on Mondays.

Day 3: Chiclayo – Departure

Batan Grande and Sican
We depart towards Batan Grande, to the East of Chiclayo, called ‘the Gold Pantry’, a funerary religious enclosure of the Sican culture in the Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary; with about 30 scattered Huacas. Crossing the river La Leche, the Japanese archaeologist Izumi Shimada discovered two important tombs in Huaca El Loro, which belonged to a high dignitary, together with countless pieces of gold. We continue to Sican, located in the town of Ferreñafe. We will visit the Museum, where we can see pieces of the Lambayeque culture such as gold funeral masks and its tumi or ceremonial knives.

Beach Circuit + Monsefu
We visit Pimentel, where surf, caballitos de totora (reed horse boats) and string fishing competitions take place. It preserves the architecture of the turn of the century (20th) and its contemporary buildings with a spacious and old pier. We then visit Santa Rosa cove, a place full of local color because of the use of the caballitos de totora; the port of Eten and the town of Monsefu, famous for its straw and cotton thread weavings, where we can watch a great number of craftsmen and its handicraft market.

Arequipa & the Colca Valley
(4 days / 3 nights)

Day 1: Arequipa – City

Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon city tour, passing by the Main Square and the Cathedral, the Church and Cloisters of the Compania de Jesus; Santa Catalina Monastery with its religious cloisters, built on the 16th century and after 400 years of monastic life was open to the public; San Francisco Church and Square and Yanahuara district, with its famous viewpoint, from where you can look at the city and its volcanoes. Overnight.

Day 2: Arequipa – Chivay

Departure from Arequipa early in the morning, towards the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. We pass by Aguada Blanca or Pampa Canahuas National Reserve, one of the best habitats for the vicuna protection. We continue through the ‘Mirador de los Andes’, a viewpoint where we can watch the mountain range and the volcanoes, to the town of Chivay. Transfer to the hotel. Lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we visit the hot springs (bring a bathing suit – entrance fee not included). Dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Colca Canyon – Arequipa

We leave early in the morning to the ‘Condor’s Cross’, from where we will have an impressive panoramic view of the Colca Canyon. We can also watch the majestic condor flying through the Andean sky. On the way back to Chivay we pass by typical towns. Lunch. In the afternoon, return to Arequipa. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel. Overnight.

Museum of Andean Sanctuaries – Juanita Mummy (2 hrs)
Visit to the Museum of Andean Sanctuaries, where we can see the Ice Maiden of Lady of Ampato, known as Juanita. She was a young girl of 12 or 14 years who was offered in sacrifice by the Inca priests’ aprox 500 years ago. Her remains were well preserved by the ice on the Nevado Ampato (more than 6,100 masl / 20,013 ft)

Countryside (3 hrs)
In the morning, excursion to the beautiful countryside, visiting the district of Paucarpata with its Colonial temple and the Inca terraces, the restored Sabandia Mill (built in 1662), Fundador House and the town of Tingo, by an artificial lagoon.

Colca Trekking (3 days / 2 nights)

Day 1: Arequipa – Cabanaconde – San Juan de Chuccho

Transfer to the bus station. At 4:40 hrs we depart on shared tourist transportation towards Cabanoconde. We pass by Cruz del Condor (Condor’s Cross), where we can watch the condors flying and the depth of the canyon. We arrive at noon (aprox). After lunch we hike downwards the canyon (3:30 hrs) to the Colca River where we can rest. Then we continue our hike crossing the first suspension bridge of the area and we arrive to the first town (San Juan de Chuccho) were we stay at local homes. Overnight.

Meals: Box lunch and dinner

Day 2: San Juan de Chuccho – Cosñirhua – Malata – Sangalle

After breakfast, we start a 3 hour trek, visiting different towns such as Malata (onsite museum) and Cosñirhua, where we share with the local inhabitants its experiences and stories. Upon arrival in Sangalle (12:00 hrs), we have lunch and we have time to enjoy its pools and surrounding nature. Overnight.

Day 3: Sangalle – Condor’ Cross – Arequipa

At 06:00 hrs we start again our trek, this time of ascent for 3:30 hrs. Upon arrival at the village of Cabanaconde we take the return bus, with tourist stops en route. When we arrive in Chivay (approx at 12: 00 noon) we can visit La Calera hot springs. After lunch at a restaurant in Chivay, we visit the National Reserve and then we continue towards the city of Arequipa. Upon arrival (approx 7 pm) transfer to the hotel.

Cajamarca (3 days / 2 nights)

Day 1: Cajamarca – Ventanillas de Otuzco – Tres Molinos

Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel. The rest of the morning is free to relax and get used to the altitude.   Excursion to the Ventanillas (little windows) de Otuzco, important archaeological ruins of the pre-Inca era with its crypts carved in quarry.  Then we visit Tres Molinos, one of the best-known farms due to the raising of dairy cattle, Paso horses, the hydrangeas garden and Los Alpes cheese factory.

Day 2: Cajamarca– Cumbemayo – La Colpa – Inca Baths

Morning excursion to Cumbemayo archeological complex where we visit the Sanctuary (cave carved on a mountain in the shape of a human head; it has petroglyphs with influence of the Chavin culture); the Caves (also have petroglyphs) and the Aqueduct (carved into volcanic rock during the pre-Inca culture). We will also see the Bosque de Piedras de los Frailones, a stone forest so called as it looks like the silhouette of friars in procession. Lunch.

In the afternoon, we visit La Colpa farm, famous for its herd of cows which are called by their name at milking time, the District of Llacanora, with its waterfalls, Callacpuma caves; and the Inca Baths, one of the most important therapeutic centers of the northern highlands of the country, the Poza del Inca, its thermal waters and the Perolitos.

Day 3: Cajamarca – Departure

City tour (3 hrs)
Visit the main tourist attractions of the city such as the Cathedral, the church of San Francisco with its crypts and the Museum of Religious Art, the Ransom Room (filled with gold and silver by Atahualpa, the last Inca), Belen Monumental Complex and Santa Apolonia hill with its traditional Seat of the Inca and a viewpoint of the city.

Porcon Farm (4 hrs)
It is the only cooperative that has achieved its maximum development with its pine forests, the most famous in Peru. It has a mini-zoo with vicuñas, deer, monkeys, eagles, otorongo, anteater, puma, etc.

Ventanillas de Combayo (5 hrs.)
It is a necropolis with tombs carved into the same rock, located in a rough area in the District of Encañada 32 Km of Cajamarca.

Kunturwasi (Full-day)
It means House of the Condor; it is located in the Cerro la Copa (in the province of San Pablo). On top of the hill is the Temple where the Condor was worshiped. We visit the local museum and the monoliths.

Lake of the Condors
(7 days / 6 nights – private service – from May to October)

Day 1: Cajamarca – Leymebamba

Airport picks up service in Cajamarca. Our car climbs the sweeping cold cordillera and descends into an oven dry valley to cross the main trunk Maranon River. Here we will see the growing of exotic tropical fruits in a micro ecological system. We continue to Leymebamba to spend the night. Meals: Lunch box and dinner

Day 2: Lake of the Condors

We saddle up early for an all day expedition into a zone that until a few years ago was unexplored; arrive at the Lake of the Condors. This mystic and natural place is a huge pristine lake surrounded by mountains and waterfalls providing water to the lake. The chullpa is perched high on a cliff above it, where the mummies were found. Our camp is nearby the lake in a rustic facility.

Day 3: Lake of the Condors

We climb up to the chullpa which Discovery Channel documented in 1998 when 219 mummies where recovered from this damp cloud forest. Despite being behind a waterfall in the rainy season, these mummies were better preserved than the ones from Egypt’s desert pyramids.

Day 4: Leymebamba

We leave camp for the long trip back to Leymebamba on horseback.

Day 5: Leymebamba –Centro Mallqui Museum – Choctamal

Today we visit the best museum of the zone, the Centro Mallqui Museum, donated by the Austrian Government for this unique discovery in 1998 at Lake of the Condors. The 219 mummies are here along with many other artifacts. On the way to Choctamal we will see the Revash Ruins. We will stay at the Choctamal Marvelous Spatuletail Lodge gateway to Kuelap and Gran Vilaya.

Day 6: Choctamal – Kuelap – Chachapoyas

We will spend the day at Kuelap Fortress known as ‘the Machu Picchu of the North’. Kuelap has over 400 buildings inside 3 levels of walls, and is the largest stone structure in all South America. Orchids and bromeliads cover the walls and trees inside this fortress.

Day 7: Chachapoyas – Chiclayo

Transfer to Chiclayo airport, for your evening flight back to Lima.

Magical Cusco

From there we will ascend to the archaeological complex of the ‘Lost City of the Incas’, Machu Picchu, located on a high mountain covered by exuberant Amazon vegetation, with its rich fauna and flora. In the Historic Machu Picchu Sanctuary we can appreciate the mix of the impressive precision of its stone structures, which reveal the deep knowledge and the technological advance of the Inca Culture, with the mystical aspect of one of the most important archaeological sites of the world. Overnight.

Day 3: Machu Picchu – Cusco

Day at leisure. You can take the time to visit the Citadel of Machu Picchu again, enjoy the Hot Springs Thermal Waters or if you are most adventurous, you can go up the Huayna Picchu. In the afternoon, you will return to Cusco by train. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel. Overnight.

We continue through the towns of Ccoya, Lamay, Calca and Urubamba. After lunch, we visit the Inca Fortress and Citadel of Ollantaytambo, a large agricultural, administrative, social, religious and military complex in the times of Tahuantinsuyo. Return to Cusco. Overnight.

Pikillacta – Andahuaylillas (4 hrs)

We start the tour visiting Pikillacta, the archaeological pre-Inca complex, 30 Km South of Cusco, where the narrow streets of the old town are preserved. Then we go to Andahuaylillas where we will visit its church, known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of the Americas’, due to its decorated polychrome ceiling, founded in the 16th century. En route we will pass by traditional towns known for their famous breads and ‘chicharron’ (pork meat).

Maras – Moray (4 hrs)

We depart towards Maras, a typical highland town with its thatched roofed houses and its Colonial church. The tour continues to Moray, where we will visit the Inca amphitheater, built in different ecological floors (or terraces).

Then we go to Salineras Maras, old salt mines that are actually operated in a natural way (well system) by the local communities. Before we return to Cusco, we continue through a bridle road to Pichingoto, a native community with typical facial features and a unique housing system (caves built close to the hill).

Pre-Columbian Art Museum (2 hrs)

The Pre-Columbian Art Museum (MAP), is located in a beautiful 18th century mansion, built over a pre-Columbian 9th century pyramid. The objects are famous masterpieces of the pre-Columbian art. Its galleries were designed to meet the highest standards of modern museographers enabling the visitors to admire its important collection of pottery, old and jewels of the ancient Peruvian cultures. 

Tourist Bus Cusco-Puno (8 hrs)

Transfer to the station for the tourist bus trip to Puno (aprox 9 hrs). On our way, we will stop at Andahuaylillas town, where we will visit its church, known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of the Americas’, due to its decorated polychrome ceiling. Then we stop at Racchi, where we will see an Inca Sanctuary dedicated to the great Inca god Wiracocha. From there, we continue to Sicuani, where we will have lunch at a local restaurant. Continuing our trip, we pass by La Raya ranch (the highest point on the route – 14,222 ft), where we can see herds of vicunas and llamas. Then we will visit the Kalasaya Temple, remnants of the ancient Pucara Culture. Upon arrival in Puno, transfer to the hotel.

Classic Huaraz
(5 days / 4 nights)

Day 1: Lima – Huaraz

Transfer to the station for your bus trip towards Huaraz. (Leaves at 10:30 pm – aprox 8 hrs).

Day 2: Huaraz – Llanganuco Lagoon + Callejon de Huaylas (3850 m)

Upon arrival in Huaraz, transfer to the hotel. We depart for a full day excursion (aprox 8 hrs) to the Callejon de Huaylas, travelling along Huaraz-Caraz road (75 Km). En route we visit beautiful towns like Marcara, Carhuaz, Mancos, Ranrahirca and Yungay. Then we enter the Cordillera Blanca to reach the unforgettable Llanganuco Lagoon at 3,850 m, surrounded by beautiful flora and the snowcapped peaks Huascaran and Huandoy.

Then we visit Caraz, where we can try the delicious ‘manjar blanco’ (sweet milk dessert); and we can go to a local restaurant to enjoy the typical regional dishes. Overnight.

Day 3: Huaraz – Chavin de Huantar

Tour of cultural importance to the Temple (3,500 BC), being one of the oldest civilizations of the Americas. It was built in a ‘terrible and wonderful’ region surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Chavin de Huantar still hides the mysteries of its origin. Here you can appreciate the impressive ‘lanzón’ (stone sculpture), the Gallery of Labyrinths, the Choquechinchay stone, the Stone Heads, ceremonial squares, the facade of the Falconidas and staircases. We pass by miner towns, Querococha lagoon, Cahuish tunnel, which crosses the Cordillera Blanca at 4,178 meters and links the Callejon de Huaylas to the Callejon de Conchucos. Overnight.

Day 4: Huaraz – City tour and Monterrey hot springs – Departure

In the morning, guided sightseeing tour through the most important streets of Huaraz, visiting the Regional Museum, the Temple of Señor de la Soledad, the trout farm, Huanchac viewpoint and Monterrey hot springs. In the evening transfer to the station for your bus trip back to Lima. (Leaves at 10:30 pm – aprox 8 hrs).

Two Sunsets at Muyuna Lodge
(3 days / 2 nights)

Day 1: Iquitos– Muyuna

Upon arrival in Iquitos, we have a brief city orientation and transfer to the pier to take the speedboat that will take us to Muyuna Lodge (aprox 3 hrs navigation upriver the Amazon River).  Upon arrival, the list of animals that have been previously seen in the area is handled.

After lunch, we take a boat trip to Lake Sapote watching different birds, like parrots, jacanas, kingfishers, herons, panguanas, partridges, pigeons, cormorants, horned screamers; and then we move to the other end of the Moena lagoon to see sloths and monkeys, as the night monkeys, squirrel and dusky titi monkeys, etc.

After enjoying sunset over the forest of mirrors, we go back to Muyuna; and following dinner, we continue with the adventure looking for white and black caimans (Amazon alligator), while watching the southern hemisphere stars.

Day 2: Jungle

Leoncito Hike, where we appreciate the immense variety of flora around the Muyuna area. At this walk we can taste the water that Uncaria tomentosa (cat’s claw) has within its vines (some say it can cure cancer and AIDS). We’ll be amazed at how huge the ceiba tree is, and we’ll see the world’s smallest monkey, the pigmy marmoset, and the squirrel and tamarin monkeys. If we’re lucky, we’ll see the howler monkey, whose deafening roar can be heard many miles away.

After lunch, boat trips to the lakes Purura and Corriente, where we can catch different kind of fish, including the famous piranha (being more difficult to fish in March, April and May). This is an area that has many strangler vines, being the favorite spot of the bird “hoatzin” or shanshos. This colorful bird looks like a prehistoric bird because it has three claws on the middle joint of the wing.

After dinner, we make a night walk in search of huge frogs, anaconda´s favorite food, in addition to seeing tarantulas.  It is worth clarifying that despite the bad reputation, they are not dangerous to humans.

Day 3: Jungle – Iquitos

Using small boats we go to the Amazon River, where we experience the most magical moment of the trip, which is to swim in the same river where the pink and gray dolphins live. We can see them, but, don’t expect to touch them. On the way back to the lodge, we see the biggest aquatic plant in the world, the famous Victoria Regia, and it is possible to see iguanas.

After lunch, we navigate for three hours on our return trip to Iquitos. Transfer to the airport.

Jungle Adventure (3 days / 2 nights)

Day 1: Iquitos – Jungle

Meet at Iquitos airport and transfer to the pier. En route, we have a brief orientation of the city. We navigate the Amazon River towards the Amazon Sinchicuy Lodge (45 min from Iquitos).

In the afternoon, we enjoy a guided ethno botanic excursion. We visit the local naturist ‘shaman who will explain about the marvelous healing properties and use of some of these plants and roots. Then we tour the Santa Maria de Ojeal farmlands where we visit the sugar cane squeeze, the fruit orchard, the fish pond with native species for their consumption, the Amazon breed cattle (cross of Cebu with Brown Swiss) and artisanal dugout canoe fishing performed on the river by locals. We visit a typical village on the shores of the Amazon, see the homes, schools, churches, shops and interact with its people. On our return trip, we will relax with an unforgettable sunset.

In the evening, we can have an evening canoe ride or walk to discover the awesome world of night insects, cicadas, spiders, praying mantis, etc. Listen to the owls and ‘ayaymamas’. Return to the lodge.

Day 2: Jungle

Bird watching during the morning early hours (before 06:00 hrs). After breakfast at the lodge, we navigate by motorboat to the opposite side of the Amazon River. During the trip we might spot river dolphins. We see typical riverside landscape plantations. Then we walk on tropical rainforest trail and boat or canoe on the Yanayacu River to the Tambo Yanayacu Lodge located in the ‘Kingdom of the Giant Trees’. We watch the rich avian fauna of the area and the diverse medicinal plants, epiphyte plants (bromeliads) growing high on the trees, and giant flora like the ‘lupuna’ or Ceiba tree species over 150-feet high. Search for primates and sloths that blend with the forest canopy. We stop for lunch at the Tambo Yanayacu (38 Miles NE of Iquitos).
In the afternoon, we fish native-style on the river for piranhas and other species. Return to the Amazonas Sinchicuy in the afternoon. After a few minutes to relax, we will be part of the reforestation program activity Plant-a-Tree in an area near the lodge.

Watch the Ayahuasca ‘take’ being prepared early in the morning. You can see the Master Shaman cooking the magic vine or ‘dead man’s rope’ pieces accompanied by chants, spells and prayers to the gods or semi-gods.

After a light breakfast at the lodge, we navigate by motorboat to the opposite side of the Amazon River. During the trip we might spot river dolphins. We see typical riverside landscape plantations. Then we walk on tropical rainforest trail and boat or canoe on the Yanayacu River to the Tambo Yanayacu Lodge located in the ‘Kingdom of the Giant Trees’. We watch the rich avian fauna of the area and the diverse medicinal plants, epiphyte plants (bromeliads) growing high on the trees, and giant flora like the ‘lupuna’ or Ceiba tree species over 150-feet high. Search for primates and sloths that blend with the forest canopy. We stop for a light lunch at the Tambo Yanayacu (38 Miles NE of Iquitos).

In the afternoon, we fish native-style on the river for piranhas and other species. Return to the Amazonas Sinchicuy in the afternoon.

We can have an optional psychotherapeutic session before dinner in order to prepare for the Ayahuasca ritual. Dinner is optional since it is suggested to fast or eat very light before the ritual.

Ayahuasca Ritual
Participants gather at the Master Shaman’s Tambo to prepare the magic circle. A number of fragrances and esoteric utensils are used, among them: the ‘shakapa’ or sweeper, the ‘mapacho’ or cigar and the ‘carmalonga’ or protective potion also known as ‘arkana’. The Master Shaman calls upon divine powers through chants, prayers and ‘icaros’ (cigar smoke puffs). The Ayahuasca potion prepared by Master Shaman is passed to participants. The effects of the ‘take’ will be noticed approximately 10 minutes after drinking it. Purging is one of the purposes of the ceremony and that is why nausea is common. This way, both body and spirit are cleansed and so harm and evil are expelled giving room to a better health. The ritual ends by midnight, and then the participants return to the lodge to rest.

* Those who participate of Ayahuasca will be assisted by the shaman’s aides when the effects of the take manifest.

** Master Shaman suggests that those who have taken Ayahuasca must refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages or having sexual contact at least for 4 days.

*** It is not necessary that all participants take Ayahuasca. If you wish you can receive a flourishing bath or cleansing or just simply witness.

Day 3: Jungle

Early in the morning the Master Shaman prepares the ‘cleansing bath’ using fragrant plants to bring perfect harmony to the participants. The cleansing takes place in an appointed place on the Sinchicuy River before breakfast time.

After breakfast dugout canoe ride and hike to see the development of sustained economy projects in the Nuevo Peru Community. If you prefer, you can stay at the lodge and rest.

In the afternoon we have an esoteric session in which the Master Shaman will reveal the meaning of the previous night hallucinations. Suggestions by the shaman to focus your life according to the manifested revelations through the Ayahuasca ‘take’.

Pacaya Samiria Expedition
(5 days / 4 nights)

Day 1: Iquitos – Nauta – Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Meet and greet at the airport. From there transfer to the pier in Nauta (approx 62 miles SW / 2 hours from Iquitos). En route, we have a brief orientation of the city. We navigate upstream the Maranon River to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (50 miles SW / approx 2 ½ hours from Nauta). We can watch diverse species of birds along the way, including egrets, hawks, horned screamers, jacanas, parrots and parakeets. It is also possible to see Amazon River dolphins.

In the afternoon, after passenger identification at the reserve’s entrance check-point, we arrive in Arequipa community where the first camp will be set up. Then we have a short walk to the nearby village.

Day 2: Pacaya Samiria National

Watch birds as they leave their nests to find their food on the river, among them cotingas, macaws, parrots and Harpy (Harpia harpyja).

After breakfast in the camp, excursion to Shansho Cocha Lake (90 minute boat trip) upstream the Yanayacu Pucate. On the way we see the giant Lupuna (Ceiba pentandra), Capirona, and Capinuri (Heliocostilis scabra) trees and also eye-catching birds as the Toucan (Pteroglossus), the Red Macaw (Ara macao), the Blue-and-Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna), the Great Egret (Egreta alba) and the Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona). Watch the Hoatzin or “Shansho” (Opysthocomus hoazin), a bird that nestles and feeds on the shores of this lake. Return to the campsite.

In the afternoon, excursion to Yanaquillo Creek to spot squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis), saddle back tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis) and sloths (Bradypus variegatus).

Day 3: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Morning excursion to Japan Creek and Yanta Lake to bird watch and fish. Among the fish species found in the reserve we find piranha (Serrasalmus), ‘sabalo’ (Brycun americus), and sardine (Triportheus), amongst others.

Late-afternoon canoe ride to see the reserve’s scenery at sunset.

Day 4: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Early morning breakfast before moving the camp to another site. We navigate along the Yanayacu Pucate where we can spot pink dolphins (Inia geoffrenssis), ‘taricayas’ local name given to the yellow-spotted river turtles (Podocnemis unifilis) and probably even giant otters (Ptenerura brasiliensis). Enjoy lunch at the edge of the river overlooking the beautiful scenery.

In the afternoon walk the camp’s surroundings to discover this area’s exquisite flora and fauna.

Ceiba Tops

Day 1: Iquitos – Ceiba Tops

Reception at the airport, brief city orientation and transfer to the dock for a twenty-five mile journey down the Amazon River to Ceiba Tops. Afternoon hike in the beautiful primary rainforest reserve surrounding the lodge which includes many huge trees festooned with epiphytes.

Morning boat ride, spotting for dolphins, to visit a small village of Yagua Indians where we have the opportunity to see some of the local crafts and a demonstration of the blowgun which some of the Yagua elders still use for hunting.

Early morning departure from Ceiba Tops by boat to the narrow motorcar crossing connecting the Amazon and Napo Rivers to continue by boat to ExplorNapo Lodge for breakfast. Hike to the spectacular Canopy Walkway spanning over 500 meters (one-third of a mile), connected by tree platforms, and reaching a height of over 35 meters (115 feet). After lunch, visit the “ReNuPeRu” Ethno botanical Garden where over 240 medicinal plants are cultivated by a local shaman who will explain the nature of Amazonian natural healing and the uses of some of the plants. Return to Ceiba Tops in time to enjoy the pool or hammocks before dinner. The tour is available for passengers who stay 2 or more nights at Ceiba Tops.

In the morning, guided sightseeing tour to the most attractive and important sites in Lima. The tour starts with a panoramic visit to the Huaca Pucllana, archaeological precinct built in the IV century A.D. It was a ceremonial and administrative centre which was considered by the Incas as a sacred site. The tour continues passing through the Historical Centre, with its colonial mansions and its Moorish style balconies, San Martin Square and the Main Square with their different buildings: Government Palace, Archbishop’s Palace, Cathedral Basilica and the Town hall.

A visit to the Banco Central de Reserva Museum (*) is included. It has a fine selection of objects made in gold, ceramic and textiles of different pre-columbine cultures. Then we visit the San Francisco Convent, which displays the largest collection of religious colonial art in America, and where we can appreciate the great Patio decorated with Seville tiles from the XVI century, Moorish arches and underground catacombs.

The tour finishes in Larcomar, an entertainment center and a privileged spot to have a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean.

(*) Banco Central de Reserva Museum closed to the public on Saturdays and Sundays afternoon and Mondays all day.

Pachacamac (4 hrs)
Guided visit to the splendid and vast archaeological citadel of Pachacamac, a sacred and ceremonial site dating back to the beginning of Christianity, where thousands of pilgrims converged top pay tribute. The site comprises pyramidal temples and enclosures build by successive pre-Columbian civilizations and the Incas. The tour includes a panoramic sightseeing of the traditional and bohemian district of Barranco and the Ecological Reserve of the Pantanos de Villa.

Larco Museum and Archaeological Museum (4 hrs.)
Guided visit to the Larco Museum, housed in a colonial mansion built in the XVII century over a pre-Columbian pyramid of the VIII century. It is considered the largest private collection of pre-Columbian Peruvian art in the world.

The tour continues with a visit to the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History (*), also housed in a colonial mansion. It is considered the grandest museum in Peru. A vast and varied cultural heritage is exhibited in its showrooms, such as two important carved stone pieces dating back to the Formative period 1000 years B.C. (the ‘Estela Raimondi’ and the ‘Tello Obelisk’), the largest textile collection and a major collection of ancient Peruvian metals.

The Peruvian Paso Horse Tour Show and the National Celebration (15:30 hrs – Tuesday and Thursday)
We depart at 15:45 hrs towards Hacienda Mamacona, 20 mins away from Lima, where we will enjoy the Peruvian Paso Horse show. We will watch these beautiful animals, with its manner of treading that is more like dancing, and the skilful work of the ‘chalanes’ (horse riders).

An early dinner is offered. It consists of a varied buffet with the most representative and delicious typical dishes of the Peruvian cuisine. During the dinner we will enjoy an excellent show of our folklore.

Lima Lit up at Night and Dinner Show (4 hrs)
Our excursion starts visiting Lima’s impressive Historical Centre with a panoramic view of the main attractions of the beautifully illuminated city. The tour is followed by a dinner-show at the ‘Junius’ restaurant, with its varied and exquisite cuisine, while watching the most renowned Peruvian dances.

Lima Lit up at Night and Magical Circuit of Water (3:30 hrs – Wednesday to Sunday)
Our excursion starts visiting Lima’s impressive Historical Centre with a panoramic view of the main attractions of the beautifully illuminated city. Follows a visit to the Parque de la Reserva, and its Magical Circuit of Water. This is a wonderful spectacle of light, sound and water fountains.

Pedro de Osma Colonial Art Museum (2:30 hrs)
Guided visit to the personal collection formed by Don Pedro de Osma among which there are paintings, sculptures, furniture and other artistic works of the Colony. The collector was a connoisseur of the Peruvian Colonial art, who gathered outstanding objects of a vast type and technique that reflects the richness of the Peruvian art of the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Caral (8 hrs)
Visit to the city of Caral, located 189 km (117 mi) north of Lima in the Supe Valley. This archaeological wonder was built in 2500 B.C. Contemporary with other civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, India and China is one of the most ancient cities of the Americas. The city of Caral is made up of a series of architectonic complex such as the Main Pyramid, the Amphitheatre Pyramid and the Elite Residential Sector.

Culinary tour (4 hrs)
The route begins by visiting a market, where you have the explanation and demonstration of the different fish and seafood of our coast; as well as fruit and vegetables of our region. Then we visit one of the best cevicherias of the city, where you will learn how to prepare our famous ceviche. The tour continues visiting a traditional Tavern, where you will learn how to prepare our well-known Peruvian drinks: pisco sour and algarrobina and you will have the opportunity to test our Pisco in its different presentations. Finally, you can taste typical dishes of Peruvian cuisine and delight with our varied and delicious desserts.

Manu Cloud Forest
(3 days / 2 nights)

Day 1: Cusco – Manu

We depart at 6 am for our bus trip to the Private Reserve that Manu Nature protects in the Cloud Forest adjacent to Manu National Park. On our trip towards the Northeast, we pass by small Andean villages while we watch groups of llamas and alpacas shepherds in their colorful dresses. We visit the colonial town of Paucartambo, gateway to the Jungle since pre-Inca times.

We arrive at the Acjanaco Andean pass, (southern boundary of the Manu Park in the high plateau of the Andes), we enter this very special habitat trekking on a moss and lichen carpeted land. This four-hour tour will take us through the high plateau, dwarf forests and cloud forest. It is possible to see several species of ferns, lichens, bromeliads and orchids (Odontoglossum, Epidendrum Pachyphyllum, Stelis and Scaphyglotis) as well as birds of prey (Black-and- Chestnut Eagle, Mountain Caracara, Black-chest Buzzard Eagle and Puna Hawk).
Important: If you choose to walk, you will not be able to participate in the other activity herewith described.

Mountain Biking
This is the option to descend with very little effort the most scenic and beautiful part of the single-lane dirt road into the cloud forest. (Not included in the price)

Day 2: Manu

Shortly before dawn, we will visit a hideout strategically located next to a ‘lek’ or place where the Cock of the Rock court. Here we can watch the national bird of the Peru spreading its brilliant red plumage, in the daily court dance to females of this species. After this demo we return to the lodge for breakfast.

Later, we travel along the Mirador trail and the beautiful scenery of the cloud forest, where we will have the opportunity if lucky to see Woolly Monkeys, Emerald Tucanetas, Torrent Duck, Golden-headed Quetzal, Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan, Amazonian Umbrella Bird, Fruit-eating Tanagers, Red-crested Cotinga and the Blue-crowned Mot-Mot, among other.

In the afternoon you can explore the unpaved road nearby. This is an opportunity to see Dusky-green Oriole, Crested Oriole, Mountain Cacique, Yellow-billed Cacique, Grass-green Tanager, Yellow-throated Tanager, or simply enjoy the profusion of plants and flowers insects and butterflies.

Rafting the Qosñipata River
Visitors of all ages can enjoy 3 hours of exciting class II and III rapids in the beautiful setting of the tropical rainforest. Lunch is served along the river course. We return to the Manu Cloud Forest Lodge early in the afternoon. (Min. 4 persons)

Manu Wildlife Center
(5 days / 4 nights – departure Thursday)

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Colorado – Manu Wildlife Center

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado airport, reception and transfer service to Santa Rosa Village (2:30 hrs trip approx).  From there, we cross Inambari River for a 15 minutes boat trip to Puerto Carlos, where we start our overland journey to Boca Colorado for 45 minutes by car, followed by four hours and half motorized boat journey ride upstream the Madre de Dios River.

Later we make our first acquaintance with the rainforest, exploring some of the 30 miles of forest trails that surround the lodge. We have an excellent chance of encountering some of the 12 species of monkeys, including the Spider Monkey and Emperor Tamarin, which inhabit the surrounding forest.

After dinner we have an enchanting night walk along the trails, in search of the nocturnal birds and animals of the rainforest.

Day 2: Macaw Claylick – Canopy Tower – Tapir Claylick

Another early start (inevitable on wildlife expeditions).  We take a short boat ride downstream, followed by a walk through the forest for some minutes, where we find the Macaw Lick project. The hide is provided with individual chairs and a convenient place for cameras and binoculars to enjoy this spectacular show.

In groups of twos and threes the scarlet Macaws come flapping in, landing in the treetops as they eye the main stage below – the eroded clay banks of the river. The drama plays out in first in tentative and then bolder approaches to the lick, until finally nearly all the macaws form a colourful and noisy spectacle on the bare banks, squabbling as they scrape clay from the hard surface. After this we continue walking and exploring on the network of trails surrounding the lodge and we return to the lodge for lunch.

Later, we continue to explore and discover the rainforest, on the network of trails surrounding the lodge, arriving in the late afternoon at our 34m/112ft. Canopy Tower. On its platform we witness the frantic rush-hour activity of twilight in the rainforest canopy, before night closes in. Then we set off along the “collpa trail”, which will take us to the lodge’s famous Tapir Clay lick. Here at the most active tapir lick known in all the Amazon, our research has identified from 8-12 individual 600-pound Tapirs who come to this lick to eat clay from under the tree roots around the edge. This unlikely snack absorbs and neutralizes toxins in the vegetarian diet of the Tapir, the largest land animal of Latin America. The lick features a roomy, elevated observation platform 5m/17ft above the forest floor. The platform is equipped with freshly-made-up mattresses with pillows. Each mattress is covered by a roomy mosquito net. The 10-m-long, elevated walkway to the platform is covered with sound-absorbing padding to prevent our footsteps from making noise. This Tapir Experience is unique and exciting because these normally very shy creatures are visible up close, and flash photography is not just permitted, but encouraged.

The hard part for modern city dwellers is to remain still and silent anywhere from 30 minutes to two or more hours. Many prefer to nap until the first Tapir arrives, at which point your guide gently awakens you to watch the Tapir 10-20m/33-66ft) away below the platform. Most people feel that the wait is well worth it in order to have such a high probability of observing the rare and elusive Tapir in its rainforest home.

Important:

  • The Macaw claylick is particularly active from the end of July until October and its activity decreases in May and June.
  • During the dry season (May-October) the level of the river where the floating hideout is, is so low that it is left on the surface.

Day 3: Oxbow Lake – Wildlife trails

We set off early for an old oxbow lake full of water lilies (Nuphar lutea) and sunken logs. As we circle the lake on our catamaran we might encounter the resident Giant Otter family on a fishing expedition, or troops of monkeys crashing noisily through the trees, jacanas, hoatzins, woodpeckers, tanagers, macaws, toucans and parakeets, among other species.

After lunch at the lodge, our guide can lead us on a freewheeling expedition in search of further wildlife encounters.  In the evening, we can take a boat ride in search of caiman (alligator-like reptiles) and other nocturnal wildlife along the riverbank.

Day 4: Canopy – Trail System

After breakfast we explore on the network of trails, with emphasis of visiting trees with flowers and fruits.  Here we expect to find more species of monkeys, as well as also numerous species of birds. Before or after the dinner, those who have energy and want more experience can have a second opportunity to visit the Observation Tower as well as the Mammal or Tapir clay lick.

Day 5: Lodge – Puerto Maldonado – Departure

We leave our lodge very early on the 2:30 hr return boat trip downstream to the Colorado Village. Breakfast is served on the boat while enjoying early morning wildlife activity as we go.  We stop in the far-west type gold-mining town of Colorado to start our overland journey to Puerto Carlos for 45 minutes, then we cross the Inambari River for 15 minutes boat trip to Santa Rosa, and finally a van or bus will drive us in approximately two-hours to the airport in Puerto Maldonado, to take our flight to Cusco or Lima.

Corto Maltes & Parrot Collpa
(3 days / 2 nights)

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Jungle

Reception at the airport and from there we will go to the office to obtain the official waterway permits and leave the luggage that we will not require during our stay in the Jungle. We embark at Capitania Port, towards the lodge, for a 40-minute navigation on the Madre de Dios River. After lunch and a free time to relax we have our first contact with the Rainforest. On this trek we see a large variety of tropical trees, medicinal plants, insects, butterflies and other animals in the 60-hectare-area of Corto Maltes.

Upon return we make a small stop at a lookout to watch toucans, macaws and other species of birds. The duration of this hike is 2 to 3 hours. Before dinner we go on a nightly boat trip, a little safari trying to spot the white caiman that lives in the river banks.

Day 2: Lake Sandoval – Monkey Island

At 6:00 am we navigate the Madre de Dios River towards Lake Sandoval (aprox 20 mins). During a 3 km hike through the exuberant vegetation, we enter the territory of Tambopata National Reserve, where we have the chance to admire giant trees, snakes, monkeys (squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys and capuchin monkeys) and various birds (Hoatzin, kingfishers and snakebirds). Once on the lake, we navigate in small rowing boats, searching for the giant otters. We also have the possibility to spot caimans, piranhas and a variety of birds.

We then stop at a rest area, where we eat breakfast, rest and collect our strength for the way back to the landing stage and the continuation of the journey to Monkey Island. Here, about 5 species of monkeys live in the wild. They are used to visitors and can come very close. Kindly note that it is very important to always follow the instructions of our guide. We return to the lodge for lunch.

At 3:30 pm we visit one of the two lookout towers (20 and 42 meters high) and designed for bird watching and viewing of other types of animals living at this altitude. In addition, we will enjoy an incredible view of the sunset.

Day 3: Parrot Clay Lick – Jungle – Puerto Maldonado

At 5:30am we go on a trek of about 20 min until we arrive at the parrot clay-lick. Here a minimum of five different species feeds on special clay, vital to their metabolism. It’s a truly marvelous, multicolored spectacle. We return to the lodge for breakfast. Then we navigate back to the city, pick up our luggage and transfer to the airport. En route we visit the local fruit market.

Ayahuasca Ceremony
We can learn about this ancient medicine of the Amazon and its cleansing and purification ritual. The Lodge has several healers or ‘ayahuasqueros’ with proven expertise and a maloka (circular construction typical of the jungle) built exclusively for Ayahuasca ceremonies. Whether for reasons of health or if one wants to live a vital and unforgettable experience, participating in a millenary ritual may be what makes this trip to the Amazon the most extraordinary. This ritual takes place always at dusk. Participants must refrain from drinking alcohol at least three days before. The day of the ceremony we can only take a vegetarian lunch and nothing after 3 pm.

Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado airport, we have a brief city tour. We embark at Capitania Port a motorized boat to cross the Madre de Dios River towards the lodge. During the navigation we can spot the ronsocos, caimans, turtles, herons, cormorants and other animal species. Lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon we visit Monkey Island – just 5 minutes from the lodge. Along the way, we enjoy the extraordinary landscapes and exuberant flora that are home to a variety of monkey species such as maquisapas, capuchins, lion monkeys, puffins and cotos, along with other animal species like the coati, sloth, and a great diversity of birds. We complete our visit of the island while enjoying the sunset—the most impressive moment of any day in the jungle. We return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Jungle – Cocha Perdida

We hike into the virgin forest towards Cocha Perdida (Lost Cocha). This is a refuge and feeding ecosystem for a tremendous diversity of animals. There, we have the opportunity to observe otters, caimans, turtles, sachavacas, and birds of every color, the majestic jaguar and a variety of fish. This is a unique area, and it remains utterly intact, with large marshes and natural springs. Then we ascend to an extraordinary vantage point, from which we have a chance to observe the magical jungle, followed by a pleasant canoe ride around the lake. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon we can enjoy the Amazonian pool and dinner. Overnight.

Day 2: Jungle – Condenado Lake

After an early breakfast we will board the motorized canoe once again to the trail head to begin a morning’s exploration by foot followed by a paddle canoe of the lake system of Condenado 1 and 2. These lakes are rich in bird and aquatic life. A family of giant otters lives in the vicinity of the lake and are often observed. Birds abound especially Rufescent Tiger-herons, Great Egrets, Wattled Jacanas, Hoatzin, the noisy Donacobius and many others. Remember to bring your hat and sun cream for there is no shade out on the water. You will return to the lodge in time for lunch.

The afternoon is for exploring the forest close to the lodge (with or without your guide), relaxing and bathing in the Gallucunca, a cool clear stream beside the lodge, or visiting our tree platforms, going up with ropes and harnesses for a bird’s eye view of the forest and for close-ups of arboreal orchids and the many other species of plants and animals that are never seen near the ground (extra cost). After dark you will go searching for caiman (alligators) and other nocturnal animals by motorized canoe along the Tambopata River.

Day 3: Jungle – Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast we return to the canoe to continue the journey upstream, a further 4 hrs, to an area deep within the National Reserve where the isolated Collpa is located. The Collpa is actually one of the large clay cliffs lining the Tambopata River in this area. After lunch we have the afternoon to explore the trail system of the area. Camping on the beach near the Collpa.

Day 3: Macaw Clay-lick – Jungle

A pre-dawn start is needed to get to the clay-lick before the birds. They arrive in search of minerals and salts and the digestive properties of the clay particles themselves. On average several hundred Macaws and smaller parrots visit the clay-lick daily, including Scarlet, Blue and Yellow, Red and Green, and Chestnut-fronted and Blue-headed parrots, among others. This clay-lick is considered one of the largest in the world. Following a late morning hike and lunch we return down river to the lodge. At night, after dinner we can go searching for Caiman (alligators) and other nocturnal animals by canoe along the Tambopata River. Overnight.

During these days you can either; explore the trail system in more depth, going further afield along trails not visited before; visit a small lake hidden amongst the trees with a floating viewing platform situated in it; take a trip up river to explore a clear forest stream teeming with fish. Full board is included during each of these days.

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Jungle

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, transfer to the office to leave any luggage that you will not require during your stay in the Jungle, at a safe deposit. From there we transfer to the embarkation port for the 2:30 hour boat ride to Refugio Amazonas. Boxed lunch. Once we arrive at the lodge, we have time to settle and relax.

In the evening, boat excursion on the Tambopata River to search for caimans.

Day 2:  Canopy – Chuncho Claylick – Tambopata Research Center

A thirty minute walk from Refugio Amazonas leads to the 25 meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase provides safe access to the platforms above. From here views of mixed species canopy flocks as well as toucans, macaws and raptors are likely.

Later, a four and half hour boat trip from Refugio Amazonas takes us to Tambopata Research Center.  One and half hours into our boat journey, as we cross the confluence with the Malinowski River, we will leave the final traces of human habitation behind. Within the 700,000 hectare uninhabited nucleus of the reserve, sightings of capybara, caiman, geese, macaws and other large species will become more frequent.

Three hours from Refugio Amazonas, deep in the Tambopata National Reserve we stop at the Chuncho claylick.  After a brief walk we have the chance to see dozens of large macaws feeding on the special sodium rich clays of the riverbank.  The Chuncho claylick probably attracts more large macaws than any other claylick in the world and the sight of dozens of macaws taking flight is truly unforgettable. The details of this stopover will depend on the weather and the amount of the macaw activity, as the birds don’t visit the claylick when it is raining.

Upon arrival at the lodge we have time to settle and relax.  Then we take a three to five kilometer hike.  We can enjoy magnificent views of the Tambopata River.  The trail goes through a forest regenerating on an old bamboo forest, is good for Howler Monkey and Dusky Titi Monkey.

After dinner scientists will provide an in depth look at the biology of macaws, their feeding habits, the theories for clay lick use, their breeding and feeding ecology, population fluctuations and the threats to their conservation.

Day 3: Macaw Claylick – Floodplain Trail – Pond Platform

On most clear mornings of the year dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and colorful spectacle. Discretely located fifty meters from the cliff, we will observe Green-winged, Scarlet and Blue-and-gold Macaws and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay. Outings are at dawn when the lick is most active.

After breakfast we take a five kilometer trail which covers the prototypical rain forest with immense trees criss-crossed by creeks and ponds. Amongst the figs, ceibas and shihuahuacos we will look for Squirrel, Brown Capuchin, and Spider Monkeys as well as peccaries.

In the afternoon we go towards a tiny pond with a platform in the middle, ten minutes upriver from the lodge. It is a great place to spot waterfowl such as Muscovy duck, sun bittern and hoatzin along with the woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers and parakeets that call this pond their home.

After dinner, we have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen.  Much easier to find are frogs.

Day 4: Terra Firme Trail – Palm Swamp Trail

An entirely different habitat characterized by smaller, thinner trees atop hills and slopes is covered by this five kilometer trail.  Saddleback tamarins are frequently found here.  As we walk near the limits of the swamp we will also keep our eyes open for rare tapir tracks.  Boxed lunch.

Growing on the remains of an oxbow lake and providing both arboreal as well as terrestrial mammals with fruits throughout the year, the aguaje palms are one of the most important food sources in the rainforest.  Demand for these fruits and great conditions for planting rice, makes the palm swamp also one of the most threatened habitats.

Day 5: TRC – Puerto Maldonado – Departure

We retrace our river and road journey back to Puerto Maldonado, the office (to pick our left baggage) and the airport.  Depending on airline schedules, this may require dawn departures.

Optional tours

Tourist bus Puno – Cusco

Transfer to the station for the tourist bus trip to Cusco (aprox 9 hrs). During the trip we will visit the Kalasaya Temple, remnants of the ancient Pucara Culture. We pass by La Raya ranch (the highest point on the route – 14,222 ft), where we can see herds of vicunas and llamas. From there, we continue to Sicuani, where we will have lunch at a local restaurant. Then we stop at Racchi, where we will see an Inca Sanctuary dedicated to the great Inca god Wiracocha. Continuing our trip we arrive at Andahuaylillas, where we will visit its church, known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of the Americas’, due to its decorated polychrome ceiling. Upon arrival in Cusco, transfer to the hotel. Overnight.

Puno – Pucara – Lampa

Full-day excursion. We visit the archaeological complex of Pucara (84 km / 52 mi from Puno). Research proves that it was primarily a religious pre-Inca town that influenced the Tiwanaku culture, which is displayed in its architecture, sculpture and pottery. Then we visit Lampa, known as the ‘Pink City’ or the ‘City of the Seven Wonders’ (75 km / 46 mi from Puno). Its archaeological ruins, the famous replica of La Pieta by Michelangelo, the Apostle Santiago parish church, the breeding of chinchillas, its folklore, its thermal waters and the stone bridge make up the 7 wonders tourist attractions.

Colonial Trujillo

Day 1: Trujillo – City and Archaeological Museum

Upon arrival, reception and transfer to selected hotel. In the afternoon, we have a guided tour of the city, visiting the Perimeter Wall (Baluarte Herrera), the Recreo Square, Iturregui Palace, Emancipation House, La Merced Church, Mariscal Orbegoso House, Calonge Urquiaga House, the Cathedral, Mayorazgo House, the Main Square. During the tour, we visit the Archaeological Museum, with its pottery, jewelry, textiles and feather art objects from different pre-Hispanic cultures in the region. Overnight.

Day 2: Trujillo – Temple of the Sun and the Moon – Chan Chan – Huanchaco – Chiclayo

We depart towards the Moche Valley (15 mins South of Trujillo) to visit the Temples of the Sun and the Moon, enormous adobe buildings built by the Moche culture in the 5th century. The walls are decorated with beautiful arabesques in high relief with motifs of the Mochica mythology.   
 
Afternoon excursion to the Chan Chan archaeological complex, to visit the Temple del Arco Iris (Rainbow) or Huaca del Dragon and the Tschudi Palace, with its ceremonial squares, worship sites, reservoirs, barns, burial platform. The tour ends in Huanchaco fishermen’s cove, a traditional fishing port where you will see the ‘Caballitos de totora’ (old Mochica reed vessels). Return to the hotel. Overnight.

In the afternoon, guided visit to Quiocta Cavern, where we can observe thousands of stalactites and stalagmites.  Return to Chachapoyas at 18:30 hrs approx.

Day 3: Kuelap Fortress
We depart towards Kuelap early in the morning, visiting the picturesque Andean villages on the route. After approx. 3 hours, we arrive at the fortress’ parking lot and we walk 15 minutes to the entrance, for the guided visit. At 14:30 we lunch in the town of Maria (or lunch box), and by the end of the day we return to the hotel, after passing through Chachapoyas.

Day 4: Chachapoyas – Departure
At agreed time, transfer to the bus station / airport.
